Learn Welding: 7018 Welding Rod

E7018 electrodes are ideal for structural steel due to their smooth, stable arc, low spatter, and minimal post-weld cleanup needs. This boosts productivity on time-sensitive projects. They provide medium penetration to prevent lack-of-fusion defects and high deposition rates from their iron powder coating, allowing more weld metal to be laid down faster.Manganese and silicon act as deoxidizers, letting the electrode weld through light surface contaminants like mill scale. They also offer excellent arc starts, reducing porosity.

Operation:

E7018 runs on AC or DC (DCEP is preferred for best arc control and bead appearance). Always follow manufacturer amperage guidelines, which vary by diameter (e.g., 1/8" typically runs 90-150 amps).

Notes: For the best results, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for operating parameters for the given E7018 stick electrode diameter. Approximations for these parameters are as follows:

3/32 inch – 80 to 100 amps
1/8 inch – 90 to 150 amps
5/32 inch –110 to 230 amps
3/16 inch – 150 to 300 amps
7/32 inch – 220 to 350 amps
1/4 inch – 270 to 380 amps

Technique:

Use a drag technique with a tight arc length. Maintain a bead width of 2.5 times the core wire diameter to prevent slag inclusions.

Storage & Handling:

These low-hydrogen electrodes are moisture-sensitive.
Keep in sealed containers until use.
Store in a dry place.
Use clean, dry gloves when handling.
After opening, store in a holding oven per the manufacturer’s specifications.
Always consult job codes for specific storage, reconditioning, and usage rules.
